First published in 1976, The Hite Report: A National Study of Female Sexuality is a major work of feminist sex research by Shere Hite. Built from anonymous questionnaire responses from thousands of women, it examines sexual experience through participants’ descriptions rather than through laboratory observation or a narrowly medical model. Its central intervention was to question the assumption that heterosexual intercourse, understood primarily as penile-vaginal penetration, naturally defines women’s pleasure or orgasm. Hite instead foregrounds masturbation, clitoral stimulation, desire, communication, lesbian experience, sexual coercion, and the effects of social expectations. The book is both a survey-based study and a cultural critique: it treats sexual knowledge as shaped by gendered power, silence, and inherited ideas about what women should want. Its sample was not designed as a statistically representative cross-section, a limitation Hite did not disguise, but the extensive first-person responses gave public visibility to experiences that conventional research often minimized. The report remains important less as a final clinical authority than as a historically influential challenge to male-centered accounts of sexuality.
