James Gleick’s The Information: A History, a Theory, a Flood is a work of popular science and intellectual history about the changing human understanding of information. Published in 2011, it ranges from oral and written systems of communication to telegraphy, computing, genetics, and the mathematical theory developed in the twentieth century. Its purpose is not simply to recount inventions. Gleick examines how methods for encoding, transmitting, storing, and organizing messages altered what societies could know and do. African drum languages, dictionaries, the electrical telegraph, and Claude Shannon’s work become connected stages in a longer transformation. The book also distinguishes information from meaning in the technical sense, while showing why that distinction has consequences far beyond engineering. Its final concern is the contemporary abundance of digital records and messages: information is increasingly easy to produce and preserve, but difficult to sort, assess, and discard. By combining scientific explanation with cultural history, Gleick presents information as both a measurable property of signals and a defining condition of modern life.
