Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is a classic work of sociology that examines how certain Protestant beliefs, especially ascetic forms of Protestantism such as Calvinism, helped shape the moral habits associated with modern capitalism. First published in 1904 to 1905 and later revised, the book is not a history of capitalism in a narrow economic sense. Instead, it is an argument about cultural and religious conditions that encouraged disciplined labor, rational calculation, and the systematic reinvestment of profit. Weber is especially interested in the way ideas about vocation, self-denial, and the search for signs of salvation could encourage a practical ethic of constant work. The book also asks why modern capitalism developed more fully in some regions than others, and why it took a specifically rational and bureaucratic form. Its importance lies in showing how economic systems are not shaped by material forces alone, but also by beliefs, values, and everyday habits.
