The Rules of Contagion is a popular-science examination of why outbreaks emerge, accelerate, and eventually decline. Written by epidemiologist Adam Kucharski, it combines the history and mathematics of infectious-disease modelling with examples involving online rumors, financial instability, violence, computer malware, and social behavior. Its purpose is not to claim that every rapidly spreading phenomenon is identical to an epidemic. Rather, Kucharski shows that epidemics have supplied a useful vocabulary for asking comparable questions: who is exposed, what makes transmission likely, how long does influence persist, and which patterns of contact shape the result. The book explains foundational ideas such as the reproduction number, susceptible and immune populations, and network effects without treating mathematical models as crystal balls. It also places contemporary modelling in a longer scientific tradition, showing how researchers learned to turn incomplete observations into practical decisions. The result is an interdisciplinary guide to the logic of spread, with particular attention to uncertainty, uneven risk, and the limits of prediction.
