The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels is a 2018 work of American history and political analysis by Jon Meacham. Rather than offering a conventional chronological survey, the book uses selected turning points from the colonial era through the Trump years to examine how the United States has repeatedly faced fear, division, demagoguery, and social conflict while still managing to renew itself. Meacham draws on episodes involving race, immigration, women’s rights, civil rights, and anti democratic movements to argue that the country’s history is not one of steady progress, but of recurring crisis followed by recovery. The book’s purpose is to place contemporary political anxiety in a longer historical frame and to suggest that democratic institutions and civic ideals have survived worse upheavals before. It is both interpretive history and a public argument about national resilience.
