The Theory of Moral Sentiments is Adam Smith’s foundational work in moral philosophy, first published in 1759 and later issued in Penguin Classics with scholarly support from Amartya Sen and Ryan Patrick Hanley. Although Smith is more widely associated with The Wealth of Nations, this earlier book shows that his thinking began with ethics rather than economics. It asks how people form moral judgments, why they care about approval and blame, and how virtue can be sustained in ordinary social life. Smith develops a systematic account of conscience, sympathy, propriety, resentment, justice, and self-command, arguing that humans are both self-interested and socially responsive beings. The book belongs to the history of moral and political thought, but it remains relevant because it connects private feeling to public order. Rather than offering rules in the abstract, Smith explains how moral judgment arises through social interaction and imaginative perspective-taking, making the work a serious investigation of human conduct and the conditions of moral life.
