The Underground Railroad: Authentic Narratives and First-Hand Accounts is a major primary source in African American history, first published in 1872 by William Still, a Black abolitionist, businessman, and leading figure in the Philadelphia antislavery movement. Rather than offering a later historical reconstruction, the book gathers records, letters, personal testimony, and narrative accounts connected to freedom seekers who passed through or were known to the Underground Railroad network. Its purpose is documentary as much as moral: it preserves the identities, routes, hardships, strategies, and family ties of enslaved people who risked capture to reach freedom. The work is especially significant because it foregrounds Black agency, both among those escaping slavery and among free Black communities who provided aid. Its style reflects nineteenth century documentary practice, with extensive detail and formal prose, but its value lies in the immediacy of its evidence and its sustained attention to individual lives.
