The View from Flyover Country by Sarah Kendzior is a nonfiction essay collection that examines the political, economic, and social deterioration of the American heartland in the years before and after the 2016 election. Drawing on essays originally written for Al Jazeera English, Kendzior uses the perspective of a scholar of authoritarianism to argue that the erosion of democratic norms in the United States was already visible long before Donald Trump entered the White House. The book is not a conventional campaign chronicle or a partisan polemic; it is a diagnosis of structural decline. Its subjects include wage stagnation, debt, racial resentment, media manipulation, weakened institutions, and the experience of living in a region often dismissed by coastal elites. The collection aims to explain why disillusionment spread, why warnings were missed, and why the conditions that enabled authoritarian politics were so deeply rooted.
