Trust: America’s Best Chance is a 2020 nonfiction book by Pete Buttigieg, written as a political and civic argument rather than a conventional memoir. Drawing on his experience as mayor of South Bend, his military service, and his run for president, Buttigieg examines why trust in American institutions, public life, and one another has eroded so sharply. The book presents that erosion as a central cause of many contemporary problems, including polarization, inequality, misinformation, and democratic fragility. At the same time, it is a forward-looking work that tries to identify what a more trustworthy civic order might require. Its purpose is not simply to diagnose decline but to argue that trust can be rebuilt through shared responsibility, fairer institutions, and a more honest public culture. The result is a compact, policy-minded reflection on democracy, national cohesion, and the practical conditions needed for collective life.
