Emil Ruder’s Typography: A Manual of Design is a foundational textbook of twentieth-century Swiss typography. First published in 1967 as a multilingual volume, it gathers Ruder’s teaching principles from the Basel School of Design into a visual and technical guide to arranging type. The book is not a history of typefaces or a catalog of stylistic effects. It treats typography as an applied discipline whose central obligation is to make written information intelligible, structured, and durable. Through numerous studies by Ruder and his students, it examines letterforms, spacing, proportion, contrast, rhythm, color, composition, and the relation of type to images. Its method is systematic: individual visual variables are isolated, tested, and then combined into coherent page structures. Closely associated with the International Typographic Style, the manual argues for clarity and order without reducing design to a fixed formula. Its enduring purpose is to train visual judgment, showing how typography can give language a precise and meaningful visible form.
