Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man is a landmark work of media theory by Marshall McLuhan, first published in 1964. Rather than treating media as neutral pipes that simply deliver content, the book argues that each medium reshapes human perception, social organization, and everyday life. McLuhan’s purpose is analytical rather than descriptive: he wants readers to see how technologies such as print, radio, television, and electronic communication alter the scale and pattern of experience. The book belongs to philosophy, cultural criticism, and communication studies, but it also reaches into sociology and psychology because it asks how tools become extensions of human faculties. Its most famous ideas, including the medium is the message, hot and cool media, and the global village, have made it one of the most influential and debated books in the study of modern media.
