Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy is a memoir by Jamie Raskin that combines private grief with public crisis. The book focuses on the period around the suicide of Raskin’s son Tommy in late 2020 and the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, which unfolded just days later. Rather than treating these events separately, Raskin presents them as linked tests of endurance, moral responsibility, and democratic legitimacy. As a constitutional scholar, congressman, and lead manager in Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial, he uses his own experience to examine how American institutions respond to violence, authoritarian pressure, and national trauma. The book is both personal and political: it is a father’s account of loss, and also an argument that democracy exists to restrain violence and protect human dignity. It will be most meaningful to readers interested in memoir, constitutional law, impeachment, and the emotional costs of public service.
