Published by Skyhorse in 2012, U.S. Army Leadership Handbook: Skills, Tactics, and Techniques for Leading in Any Situation presents the U.S. Department of the Army’s leadership doctrine in a commercially available handbook format. Associated with FM 6-22, it is a professional military manual rather than a narrative business book or a collection of personal anecdotes. Its purpose is to explain how Army leaders create conditions for mission accomplishment while also improving their organizations and developing people. The text frames leadership as a disciplined practice rooted in character, competence, judgment, communication, and responsibility. Its central organizing model, “BE–KNOW–DO,” connects a leader’s attributes with learned knowledge and observable action. The handbook addresses the foundations of leadership; character, presence, and intellect; the competencies of leading, developing, and achieving; organizational influence; and counseling. Although its primary setting is military service, its framework can be read by civilian supervisors and students as a structured account of accountable leadership in demanding, hierarchical, team-based environments.
