User Friendly: How the Hidden Rules of Design Are Changing the Way We Live, Work, and Play is a nonfiction history and critique of user-experience design by journalist Cliff Kuang, written with designer Robert Fabricant. The book examines the widespread assumption that technologies should anticipate human needs and minimize effort. Rather than treating this assumption as a recent feature of apps and smartphones, it traces its development across industrial design, wartime systems, computing, and consumer technology. Kuang and Fabricant show that user friendliness is not simply a matter of attractive interfaces or convenience. It is a set of choices about what people are expected to notice, decide, remember, and control. Their account connects design methods to larger shifts in work, safety, consumption, accessibility, and social behavior. A central concern is the tradeoff embedded in seamless experiences: a product can reduce friction while also concealing its operations and narrowing meaningful human agency. The purpose is both historical and analytical, giving general readers and practitioners a vocabulary for recognizing how designed environments guide everyday life.
