Virus Mania is a polemical investigative nonfiction book by journalist Torsten Engelbrecht, first developed with physician Claus Köhnlein and expanded in later editions with Samantha Bailey and Stefano Scoglio. Its long subtitle signals its broad scope: COVID-19, measles, influenza outbreaks, AIDS, polio, hepatitis C, cervical cancer, SARS, BSE, and the 1918 influenza pandemic are treated as examples of what the authors regard as recurring errors in medicine and public health. The central purpose is not to explain conventional virology but to challenge it. The authors argue that disease outbreaks are routinely overstated, that laboratory tests do not establish viral causation, and that commercial, institutional, and media incentives help sustain epidemic narratives. These claims conflict sharply with the scientific consensus on infectious disease, viral isolation, epidemiology, vaccination, and diagnostic testing. Accordingly, the book is best understood as a controversial critique of medical institutions and risk communication rather than as a reliable substitute for mainstream medical guidance. Its value for analysis lies in the forceful way it joins scientific skepticism, historical revisionism, and political economy.
