Weaving the Web is Tim Berners-Lee's account of the origins, early development, and intended future of the World Wide Web, written with Mark Fischetti. First published in 1999, it combines technological history, personal memoir, and a policy argument about how a global information system should be governed. Berners-Lee traces the path from his interest in linked information and his program Enquire at CERN to the practical creation of Web standards such as URLs, HTTP, and HTML. The book is not a technical manual, although it explains why simple shared conventions mattered more than any isolated software product. Its larger purpose is to defend the Web as an open, interoperable medium in which people can both consume and create information. Berners-Lee also examines pressures that could narrow that vision, including proprietary control, censorship, unequal access, and weak privacy. The result is a primary-source perspective on a foundational technology and an enduring statement of the social principles its inventor believed should guide it.
