What Is Intelligence?: Lessons from AI About Evolution, Computing, and Minds is a wide-ranging work of scientific and philosophical synthesis by AI researcher Blaise Agüera y Arcas. Published by MIT Press and Antikythera, it asks how intelligence should be understood after the striking capabilities of modern neural networks, especially large language models. Rather than treating intelligence as a uniquely human faculty or a property that begins with brains, the book places it within a longer story of evolution, self-reproduction, learning, and computation. Its central proposal is that predictive modeling is deeply connected to both living activity and intelligent behavior. Agüera y Arcas draws together artificial life, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, machine learning, physics, and philosophy to examine that proposal from several directions. The result is not a narrow technical guide to AI, nor a conventional popular account of consciousness. It is an argument for viewing minds, organisms, societies, and machines as potentially continuous manifestations of evolving systems that model and respond to their worlds.
