Who Says Elephants Cannot Dance is Louis V. Gerstner Jr.s firsthand business memoir of leading IBM from 1993 to 2002. Gerstner arrived when the company faced severe losses, declining relevance in a technology market shaped by personal computing, and widespread calls for IBM to be dismantled. The book explains how he and his team stabilized the business, rejected a breakup, and repositioned IBM around customers, integrated technology, and services. It is not a general management manual or a technical history of computing. Instead, it combines an executive account of major decisions with reflections on strategy, organizational design, incentives, and corporate culture. Its central purpose is to challenge the belief that a large, long-established institution is inherently unable to change. Gerstner presents transformation as a demanding process of setting priorities, making difficult tradeoffs, changing behavior, and executing consistently. IBM provides the setting, but the book addresses a broader question: how can leaders renew an organization whose past success has become an obstacle to its future?
