Whole Earth Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto is a 2009 nonfiction book by Stewart Brand, a longtime environmental thinker best known for founding the Whole Earth Catalog. Written as an argument for a more practical form of environmentalism, the book rejects purity tests and ideological reflexes in favor of evidence-based responses to climate change and other ecological pressures. Brand frames the planet’s present situation around three major forces: global warming, urbanization, and biotechnology. From that starting point, he makes a controversial case that solutions often resisted by traditional green movements, including nuclear power, dense cities, and genetically modified agriculture, deserve serious consideration. The book is both a critique of conventional environmental dogma and a proposal for treating environmental problems as design and governance challenges that require experimentation, transparency, and adaptability.
