Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice is a classic work of Zen Buddhism by Shunryu Suzuki, compiled from talks he gave to students at the San Francisco Zen Center. Rather than presenting Zen as a system of doctrine, it introduces the practice through brief, accessible reflections on zazen, posture, breathing, attention, and everyday awareness. Its purpose is both instructional and philosophical: to show that Zen is not something achieved through accumulation of ideas, but through direct experience and repeated practice. The book is especially well known for its central teaching that beginner’s mind remains open, curious, and receptive, while expert’s mind narrows into habit and assumption. Because of its simplicity and clarity, it has become one of the most widely recommended introductory books on Zen for Western readers, yet it also rewards rereading because its ideas are intentionally spare and cumulative.
