A Deadly Wandering is a work of narrative nonfiction by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Matt Richtel. It examines a fatal 2006 crash in Utah caused by Reggie Shaw, a young college student who was using his phone while driving, and the deaths of scientists James Furfaro and Keith O'Dell. Rather than treating the event as a simple cautionary tale, Richtel connects the investigation, prosecution, victims, families, and Shaw's eventual acceptance of responsibility to research on attention and distraction. The book belongs simultaneously to investigative journalism, science writing, legal narrative, and social criticism. Its central purpose is to explain why people persist in dangerous distracted behavior even when they understand the risks. Richtel argues that digital devices exploit powerful social impulses while demanding forms of divided attention that the brain handles poorly. By placing cognitive science alongside a deeply human account of loss, accountability, and public policy, the book broadens distracted driving from an individual lapse into a question about technology, design, culture, and the limits of human attention.
