The Elements of User Experience: User-Centered Design for the Web and Beyond, second edition, is a concise foundational text on the planning and design of digital products. Written by Jesse James Garrett, it is not a procedural manual for producing screens or running a complete research program. Its purpose is to supply a shared framework for thinking through the interconnected decisions that shape an experience. Garrett organizes this framework as five planes: strategy, scope, structure, skeleton, and surface. The model begins with user needs and product objectives, then moves toward the visible qualities of a finished interface. Along the way, it distinguishes products primarily experienced as functionality from those primarily experienced as information, while showing that many real products combine both. First developed for the Web, the framework remains applicable to applications and other interactive services because it focuses on design decisions rather than transient technologies. The second edition updates the discussion for a broader digital context while preserving the book's central bottom-up model.
