Margaret A. Boden’s AI: Its Nature and Future is a concise work of cognitive science and philosophy of artificial intelligence, published in 2016. Rather than serving as a programming manual or a survey of particular software tools, it examines what AI achievements mean: what kinds of capacities machines have, what they lack, and which claims about their future are warranted. Boden places symbolic systems, machine learning, neural networks, robotics, artificial life, language, creativity, and emotion within a longer history of attempts to understand mind through computation. Her central concern is conceptual as well as technical. A system may produce useful behavior, but does that establish intelligence, understanding, creativity, or consciousness? The book also treats AI as a productive scientific instrument. Efforts to build intelligent machines have supplied models and questions that help psychology, linguistics, biology, and philosophy investigate human and animal minds. Its purpose is therefore to separate genuine achievements from inflated expectations while clarifying why the field matters.
