Algospeak: How Social Media Is Transforming the Future of Language is a 2025 nonfiction book by linguist and digital creator Adam Aleksic, widely known online as Etymology Nerd. It examines how platform algorithms influence the words people encounter, repeat, adapt, and eventually carry into everyday speech. Aleksic uses algospeak in an expanded sense: not only coded terms designed to evade moderation, but a broader system of language change shaped by recommendation feeds, monetization, online identity, and creator incentives. Drawing on linguistics, internet archives, surveys, data, and his experience making short-form educational content, he explains phenomena ranging from euphemisms such as unalive to micro-labels, meme grammar, fan language, and slang associated with politically charged communities. The book treats online language neither as empty deterioration nor as simple creativity. Its purpose is to show that rapid linguistic change is connected to commercial systems that decide what becomes visible, rewarded, suppressed, and copied. In doing so, it links seemingly trivial slang to larger questions about culture, identity, censorship, and power.
