Ctrl + Alt + Chaos: How Teenage Hackers Hijack the Internet is a reported true-crime and cybersecurity book by BBC cyber correspondent Joe Tidy. It examines the culture in which technically capable teenagers move from online pranks, gaming-related disruption, and status-seeking into consequential cybercrime. The book is anchored in the career of Finnish hacker Julius Kivimäki, also known as Zeekill, while placing his trajectory alongside groups including LulzSec, HTP, UG Nazi, and Lizard Squad. Its most disturbing case concerns the attack on Finland's Vastaamo psychotherapy provider, in which highly sensitive patient records were stolen and victims were directly extorted. Tidy uses reporting, interviews with hackers, and perspectives from police to ask how online peer groups normalize harm and turn digital skill into criminal power. Rather than treating attacks as purely technical failures, the book emphasizes their human consequences and the social conditions that make attention, notoriety, and chaos attractive to young offenders. It is therefore both an investigation of particular crimes and a wider examination of youth-driven cybercrime.
