Sync: The Emerging Science of Spontaneous Order is a popular science book by applied mathematician Steven H. Strogatz. It examines synchronization, the process by which interacting systems adjust their rhythms until coordinated patterns arise. Strogatz moves across physics, biology, mathematics, and network science, using examples such as flashing fireflies, chirping insects, cardiac pacemaker cells, lasers, and orbital motion. Its purpose is not to claim that these systems operate through identical physical forces. Rather, it shows that their collective behavior can often be understood through related mathematical ideas about oscillators, coupling, feedback, and self-organization. The book also presents science as an ongoing human practice, including the formation of questions, models, collaborations, and explanatory breakthroughs. Written for nonspecialists, it translates concepts from nonlinear dynamics and complexity research into accessible prose without treating mathematics as mere ornament. Sync is therefore both an account of a scientific field and an argument for seeing apparent disorder as a setting in which organized collective behavior can emerge.
