Cybernetic Revolutionaries: Technology and Politics in Allende’s Chile is a work of history of technology by Eden Medina that examines Project Cybersyn, an ambitious effort to apply management cybernetics to Chile’s nationalized economy during Salvador Allende’s government from 1970 to 1973. Rather than treating the project as a quaint precursor to the internet or as evidence that Chile intended rule by computer, Medina situates it within a contested program of democratic socialist transformation. Drawing on archival research and interviews, she follows the collaboration among Chilean officials, engineers, factory personnel, and British cybernetician Stafford Beer. The book explains the project’s telex communications network, economic monitoring tools, simulation work, and famous operations room, while showing that their designs embodied choices about authority, participation, expertise, and national sovereignty. Its purpose is therefore broader than recovering a neglected computing project. Medina demonstrates that technologies are political arrangements whose meanings and capabilities depend on institutional conditions, social conflict, and historical circumstance.
