TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information is a work of cultural criticism and media history by Erik Davis. First published in 1998 and later reissued in an updated edition, it examines the spiritual, occult, and apocalyptic ideas that accompany communications technologies. Rather than treating technology as a neutral collection of tools or as evidence that modern life has become wholly secular, Davis traces recurring religious desires through the history of print, electricity, telegraphy, radio, computing, and network culture. He uses the term techgnosis for the tendency to imagine information as a route to hidden knowledge, liberation from bodily limits, or transcendence. The book moves across intellectual history, popular culture, esotericism, and digital subcultures, linking technological enthusiasm to older traditions such as Gnosticism, alchemy, Kabbalah, and millennialism. Its purpose is interpretive rather than predictive: Davis asks readers to recognize the myths embedded in technological language and to assess their consequences more clearly.
