Cory Doctorow’s Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It is a nonfiction analysis of the declining quality of digital platforms and the political choices behind that decline. Expanding a term Doctorow coined in 2022, the book argues that familiar frustrations with search engines, social networks, online marketplaces, app stores, streaming services, and connected devices are not isolated product mistakes. They are recurring outcomes of a business model that exploits dependence. Doctorow combines technology criticism, consumer-rights advocacy, antitrust history, and examples from major platforms to explain how services that initially appear useful and inexpensive become increasingly hostile to the people who rely on them. His central purpose is diagnostic as well as political: to show that platform decay has identifiable mechanisms, beneficiaries, and remedies. Rather than treating worsening digital life as an unavoidable consequence of innovation, Doctorow locates it in monopoly power, weak regulation, restrictive intellectual-property rules, and barriers that prevent users, workers, and businesses from leaving or connecting alternatives.
