Futureproof: 9 Rules for Humans in the Age of Automation is a nonfiction technology and work guide by New York Times columnist Kevin Roose. Published in 2021, it addresses a central anxiety of the AI era: how people can remain valuable, autonomous, and fulfilled as software increasingly performs cognitive as well as routine physical tasks. Roose does not frame automation as an inevitable contest in which humans must match machines in speed, efficiency, or data processing. Instead, he argues that this response can make workers and institutions easier to automate. The book combines reporting on technological change with practical rules for recognizing and strengthening distinctly human capacities, including judgment, creativity, social connection, and moral responsibility. Its scope extends beyond career planning. Roose also examines how algorithmic systems shape attention, consumption, workplace management, and public life. The result is a human-centered framework for adapting to automation while retaining agency over the tools and institutions that increasingly organize daily life.
