Man and His Symbols is a major introduction to analytical psychology and the final book project associated with Carl G. Jung. First published after Jung died in 1961, it was designed for general readers rather than specialists. Jung wrote the opening chapter, while close collaborators, including Marie-Louise von Franz, Joseph L. Henderson, Aniela Jaffe, and Jolande Jacobi, developed the remaining sections under his direction. The book explains how dreams, myths, art, religion, and everyday images express activity in the unconscious mind. Its central purpose is to show that symbols are not decorative signs but meaningful forms through which the psyche communicates material not yet fully grasped by conscious thought. Richly illustrated and organized around examples from culture and clinical experience, the work presents concepts such as archetypes, the collective unconscious, the ego, the shadow, and individuation in an accessible form. It remains one of the most widely read entrances into Jungian psychology.
