Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey is a nonfiction manifesto that reframes rest as a political, spiritual, and bodily practice rather than a private luxury. Drawing on Hersey’s work as founder of The Nap Ministry, the book argues that grind culture, capitalism, and white supremacy train people to treat constant productivity as a moral ideal. Its purpose is to challenge that logic and restore rest as a human right, especially for Black communities and other people whose labor has been historically exploited. The book combines reflective prose, cultural critique, and practical invitations to nap, pause, daydream, and slow down. Rather than presenting rest as an efficiency strategy, it treats it as a way to reclaim autonomy, interrupt trauma cycles, and imagine a more humane social order.
