The Fourth Industrial Revolution is a concise work of technology and public-policy analysis by Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum. First published in 2016, it argues that a distinct technological era is emerging from the convergence of digital systems, physical machines, and biological science. Schwab places this development after the mechanization, electrification, and computer-driven automation associated with the prior industrial revolutions. His central concern is not simply that artificial intelligence, robotics, connected devices, advanced materials, and biotechnology are improving rapidly. It is that their combined effects are changing institutions, labor markets, production, privacy, security, and even conceptions of human identity at unusual speed and scale. The book surveys major technological drivers, considers their likely effects on business, government, society, and individuals, and advocates active stewardship rather than passive adaptation. It is therefore less a technical manual or a prediction-heavy futurist narrative than a framework for discussing how technological change should be governed and directed.
