Thomas Rid’s Rise of the Machines: A Cybernetic History is a work of intellectual, technological, and political history about the changing meanings of cybernetics. Rather than treating cybernetics as a narrow technical precursor to modern computing, Rid follows it from Norbert Wiener’s wartime work on prediction and control through its migration into military research, countercultural communities, computer culture, and debates about freedom and security. The book’s purpose is explanatory as well as corrective: it shows that many contemporary uses of cyber language inherit older ideas about feedback, communication, intelligent machines, and human control. Rid is especially concerned with the gap between what technologies could demonstrably do and what advocates claimed they soon would do. This gap produced durable myths, including visions of machine intelligence, seamless human machine fusion, virtual worlds, and liberated networks. Combining scientific history with cultural and strategic analysis, the book explains why cybernetics mattered not simply because it generated devices, but because it supplied an influential vocabulary for imagining the future.
