Published in 1972, Steps to an Ecology of Mind gathers Gregory Bateson’s essays from roughly three and a half decades of work across anthropology, communication, psychiatry, cybernetics, evolution, and epistemology. It is not a linear treatise or a conventional introductory text. Instead, the collection shows a thinker returning to connected problems from different disciplinary directions: how relationships generate patterns, how communication organizes experience, how learning changes contexts, and why human purposes can destabilize larger ecological systems. Bateson’s central project is an ecology of mind, meaning an inquiry into the patterns of information, difference, and feedback that connect organisms, societies, and environments. The essays include influential discussions of schismogenesis, the double bind, play and fantasy, levels of learning, and the limits of conscious control. Their purpose is less to supply a closed doctrine than to train readers to replace isolated, linear explanations with relational and recursive ones. The result is a demanding but unusually wide-ranging work of systems-oriented thought.
