Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now is a concise 2018 work of technology criticism by computer scientist and virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier. Framed as a direct polemic rather than a neutral history of the internet, it examines social platforms whose services are funded by targeted advertising and large scale data collection. Lanier does not argue that digital communication is inherently harmful, nor does he reject technology as such. His target is a specific commercial architecture that profits by predicting and altering users behavior. He names that system BUMMER, short for Behaviors of Users Modified and Made into Empires for Rent. Across ten connected arguments, Lanier links this model to diminished autonomy, compulsive use, emotional distress, distorted public discourse, and weakened empathy. Deleting an account is presented both as a personal experiment in recovering agency and as a refusal to support a damaging incentive system. The book aims to give readers language for evaluating platforms beyond convenience, connectivity, and entertainment.
