Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World is a 2018 nonfiction work by cognitive neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf. Written as a sequence of letters to a broad community of readers, it examines how the shift from print-centered reading to screen-centered habits may alter attention, comprehension, memory, and thought. Wolf does not treat the brain as a fixed reading machine. Because reading is a learned cultural invention, its neural circuits adapt to the environments and practices in which people read. This adaptability creates both opportunity and risk: digital media offers access, speed, and new forms of literacy, but its incentives toward rapid scanning and continual distraction may weaken the slower processes involved in deep reading. Drawing on neuroscience, literacy research, education, literature, and her work on dyslexia, Wolf argues for a biliterate reading brain. Her purpose is not to reject technology, but to preserve the capacity to read demanding material critically, reflectively, and empathetically while using digital tools wisely.
