The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google is a 2008 work of technology history and social analysis by Nicholas Carr. Its central purpose is to explain why computing was moving away from individually owned machines and corporate data centers toward services delivered through the Internet. Carr frames this development through an extended comparison with the nineteenth and early twentieth century transition from private electricity generation to the electric power grid. When power became cheap, standardized, and broadly distributed, businesses stopped treating generators as strategic assets and reorganized around new possibilities. Carr argues that computing was entering a comparable utility phase. The book combines the history of electrification, an account of the Internet and large scale data centers, and a critical examination of cultural and economic consequences. Rather than offering a technical guide to cloud systems, it asks how a change in infrastructure can alter institutions, work, media, and personal behavior. Its value lies in making an emerging technology shift legible through a concrete historical precedent.
