The Club is a work of sports business history by Wall Street Journal journalists Joshua Robinson and Jonathan Clegg. It examines how English football, once burdened by poor facilities, disorder, limited broadcasting, and financially modest clubs, produced the Premier League in 1992 and turned it into a global entertainment enterprise. Rather than treating that rise as inevitable, the book centers the decisions and conflicts that made it possible: the break from the old Football League, the competition for television income, the commercialization of club brands, and the arrival of extraordinarily wealthy owners. Drawing on extensive interviews with executives, owners, managers, and other participants, Robinson and Clegg combine institutional history with boardroom reporting. Their purpose is not simply to celebrate a successful league. The book also tracks the costs of success, including sharper inequalities between clubs, rising barriers for local supporters, and pressure on the cultural identity of English football. It is therefore both an account of a league and a case study in globalization, media power, and modern sports ownership.
