Jacques Peretti’s The Deals That Made the World is an investigative business and social-history book about the private decisions that helped organize modern life. Rather than treating politics, markets, technology, public health, and consumer culture as separate fields, Peretti argues that pivotal corporate strategies and financial arrangements often connect them. Drawing on his long experience as a BBC investigative reporter and journalist, he examines ten consequential business deals and decisions whose effects extend beyond boardrooms: into diets, medicine, online payments, global food prices, and economic crises. The book’s central purpose is to shift attention from the visible institutions of democratic government to the less visible power exercised by executives, financiers, advisers, and firms. Its approach is broad and interpretive, using selected cases to trace how commercial incentives become social realities. Peretti is less interested in celebrating entrepreneurial achievement than in showing how market-making choices can redefine what people consume, fear, need, and consider normal.
