The DevOps Handbook is a nonfiction management and technology guide by Gene Kim, Jez Humble, Patrick Debois, and John Willis. First published in 2016 and substantially expanded in its second edition, it explains how organizations can improve the delivery and operation of software without treating speed, stability, security, and employee well-being as competing goals. Rather than prescribing a particular cloud platform, programming language, or toolchain, the book presents DevOps as an operating model that connects product management, development, quality assurance, operations, security, and leadership. Its purpose is both explanatory and practical: it defines the principles behind high-performing technology organizations, then connects those principles to technical practices, organizational design, measurement, and cultural change. Drawing on Lean manufacturing, Agile development, and examples from technology organizations, the handbook frames software delivery as a system whose constraints, delays, risks, and feedback loops must be managed deliberately. It is consequently less a narrow implementation manual than a broad reference for changing how technology work flows through an enterprise.
