David Kirkpatrick's The Facebook Effect is a reported business and technology history of Facebook from its 2004 origin at Harvard to its emergence as a global social-networking giant by 2010. Drawing on extensive access to Mark Zuckerberg and other company leaders, Kirkpatrick reconstructs the decisions, conflicts, financing arrangements, product choices, and cultural assumptions behind the company’s extraordinary early expansion. The book is not a technical manual or a general history of the internet. Its purpose is to explain how a student-built service became a central infrastructure for online identity, communication, and social discovery. It places Zuckerberg at the center while also showing that Facebook was shaped by engineers, early executives, investors, competitors, and a rapidly enlarging user community. Kirkpatrick considers both business execution and social consequence: Facebook grew because it made real-world relationships visible and persistent online, but that same design gave the company unusual influence over personal information and public interaction. As a contemporary account of the company’s formative years, it captures Facebook before many later controversies fully unfolded.
