Pedro Domingos’s The Master Algorithm is a popular science and technology book about machine learning, published in 2015. Its central question is whether the many methods used to make computers learn from data could ultimately be combined into a universal learner: an algorithm able to derive broad knowledge from experience. Rather than offering a programming manual, Domingos provides a conceptual map of the field, explaining why learning algorithms now shape search engines, recommendations, advertising, medicine, science, and business decisions. The book is organized around five major intellectual traditions in machine learning, each of which supplies a different account of what learning requires. Domingos explains their methods, strengths, and blind spots, then argues that progress depends on synthesis rather than allegiance to one camp. Alongside this technical overview, he considers the social consequences of systems that continually learn from human behavior. The result is an accessible but ambitious introduction to machine learning as both a scientific project and a source of economic and political power.
