The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains is a work of popular nonfiction by Nicholas Carr, first published in 2010 and later expanded with an afterword addressing smartphones and social media. Building on Carr's earlier Atlantic essay about Google and intelligence, the book examines whether habitual internet use changes not simply what people know, but how they attend, read, remember, and reason. Its central concern is neuroplasticity: because the brain adapts to repeated mental activity, a medium built around links, alerts, rapid switching, and abundant information may cultivate habits that conflict with sustained concentration. Carr combines personal observation, intellectual history, media theory, and accessible accounts of research on attention and memory. He does not portray the internet as useless or deny its enormous practical value. Instead, he asks readers to account for the cognitive tradeoffs embedded in a system optimized for speed, access, and constant engagement. The result is a provocative examination of deep reading and reflective thought in a digitally saturated culture.
