Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy is a 2016 nonfiction critique of the growing use of algorithms in consequential public and private decisions. Written by mathematician and former Wall Street quant Cathy O Neil, it argues that numerical models are not automatically objective merely because they use data and formal rules. The book examines systems used to evaluate teachers, rank students and job applicants, calculate creditworthiness and insurance prices, guide policing, and influence political communication. Its central purpose is to show how some models convert historical inequality into apparently neutral predictions, then apply those predictions at large scale. O Neil calls the most dangerous systems weapons of math destruction, defined by opacity, scale, and harmful consequences. Through accessible examples rather than technical instruction, the book connects statistical modeling to questions of power, accountability, discrimination, and democratic life. It is both an introduction to algorithmic governance and an argument that high impact models require public scrutiny, meaningful avenues of appeal, and responsibility from their designers and users.
